Can you advise on a public wireless printing solution?

This TechSoup user is installing public WiFi AP in several libraries using the Linksys wrt54gs AP and is now looking into allowing the public to print (from their own personal notebooks) to the network printers located in each library.

There are a few problems:

1. How do the patrons find the printer so they can print to it?

2. How should printer drivers be installed?

3. The public WiFi (172.20.x.x) is separate from the “wired” network (192.168.x.x) in order to keep virus activity out of our “wired” network

The user has looked into these options:

1. PrintMe

Price: $600 per location (costly for the library) Allows patrons to upload documentss and webpages to their server and it sent to a workstation located in the library to be printed.

2. Printspots

Price: $395 per location (still pretty costly). Works just like PrintMe, but allows for credit card charges, if needed.

3. Wireless Print Server

The printers have both a network card and parallel ports on them. Would the public have to install the printer drivers?

The user would also be interested in an open source version of PrintMe or Printspots.

Adobe Acrobat 8.0 printers missing

What to do when suddenly Adobe Acrobat 8.0 Pro’s printers go MIA? This TechSoup user is using Adobe Acrobat 8.0 Pro on Windows XP Home. There’s been no problems until recently when the Distiller and Acrobat printer suddenly disappeared from the printer list. The “Add Printer” function does not work, as Windows can’t find the printers.

The user can’t print to Distiller or convert files to PDF. All Acrobat icons are still in other programs. There doesn’t appear to be any viruses causing the error. Updates and patches from Adobe for 8.1 won’t install, and the user gets the error message:

Error 1334
“crossproductlinkerror.html” file not found in “Data1.cab”

The patch from Microsoft for the 32 and 64 bit encryption problems that cause Acrobat printers to fail will not install either. The error message says that the update is not a Win32 update.

The user has also tried the Adobe repair installation, but this aborts near the end with the message, “File missing. formdesigner.ini6…..’ not found in “Data1.cab.” However, the user can still open and run FormDesigner. The user had to re-install one other printer (an HP all-in-one), but the other three printers (laser and inkjet) are intact.

Can you help with a Linksys wireless router?

This TechSoup user is having a disconnect—literally! The user’s Linksys wireless router is hooked up directly to the modem. All lights indicate that the router is working properly.

There are two computers with wireless cards. One is a desktop and connects to the router with no problems. The second is a laptop with a Linksys card that won’t connect. It hangs and reads, “Not connected.” Despite this message, it does allow the user to browse the internet for a few minutes, but then disconnects.

Cisco PIX 501 blues

This TechSoup user is a newbie to Cisco PIX 501 and needs help. All data center servers at his company are behind a Cisco PIX 501, and he is not sure how these were originally configured.

The user has installed Advenet Application Manager in one of the data center’s Linux machines to monitor clients’ servers. The development team has installed JBoss on the client server and wants to monitor this server through the monitoring software.

The client has allowed full access to the monitoring server’s IP, and now the user needs give full access to the the client server’s IP.

He’s tried the following command:

access-list outside_access_in permit tcp any host 202.87.xx.xxx

202.87.xx.xxx (IP of the monitoring software)

However, he needs to know what other commands are needed to allow full access to all ports to the client server.

Why can’t the laptops get IP addresses from the range extender?

This user’s range extender problem has extended his range of knowledge, so to speak. The user has a Cisco wre54g range extender on the network, set up with a class A IP address. The extender has successfully picked up and bridged the Wireless access point. Yet soon thereafter, the extender loses its link; it physically can see the access point, but is unable to give the laptops IP addresses. The extender gets a full signal, but cannot send the IPs to the laptops.

This user has tried Extendersa without encryption, removing all security, attempting one machine at a time, and disabling other wireless devices, all to no avail.
